Empowering Fitness: My Journey, My Commitment to Your Wellbeing & Scope of Practice.

When I first stepped into a Zumba class 16 years ago, I had no idea how transformative this experience would be for me and for those I would eventually teach. I was not a sport person, I had very little interest in exercise, but I was feeling frumpy and unhappy, and my inner voice told me it was time to find a way

to improve my lifestyle.

As I reflect on my path, I want to share my story with you—my students—so you can understand the passion and dedication that fuels my classes.

The Beginning of My Zumba Journey

Before I discovered Zumba, I was like many of you—juggling the demands of life, feeling the weight of working life as a Mum, and searching for a way to stay active. I spent the best part of thirty years sitting in an office, which is no good for anyone! I had tried various forms of exercise, but nothing seemed to stick. Then, I stumbled upon a Zumba class, and it was love at first dance!

The music, the energy, and the sheer joy of moving to the rhythm captivated me. I felt alive! It was a revelation that exercise could be fun, and I knew I had found my calling.

I started attending classes regularly with the wonderful Colombian Zumba Instructor, Federico Bedoya, and soon, I was not just a participant but a passionate advocate for this dance fitness phenomenon. I realised that Zumba was more than just a workout; it was a celebration of life, a way to connect with others, and a means to uplift our spirits.

Becoming an Instructor

Fueled by my passion, I decided to take the leap and become a certified Zumba instructor. In the training I learned about the importance of safety in exercise, how to create engaging routines, and the best ways to motivate others.

I remember my first class as an instructor vividly. I was nervous, but as soon as the music started, I felt a wave of excitement wash over me. Seeing my students smile, laugh, and move together was incredibly rewarding. I knew I was in the right place, doing what I was meant to do.

Progressing Since 2019

Since teaching that first class, my journey has been nothing short of amazing. I have continued to learn and grow, taking additional training courses to ensure that my classes are safe and effective.

The Covid pandemic, was for me, the perfect storm. Stuck in doors I decided to use the time to set up my business. Firstly building the website, which was a new challenge I can assure you!

I also did the BollyX dance fitness training in the first lockdown, and that ignited my love of the Bollywood inspired fitness programme. BollyX transported us from the imprisonment of the pandemic, 'virtually' to the exotic culture of India and the subcontinent. A real tonic in lockdown.

After the BollyX training I began teaching classes from my garden or living room on Zoom. I honed my skills through the online community and so when lockdowns were phased out I was ready to go. The rest is history.

In 2022, after spending a year training in the gym with my Personal Trainer, and reducing my weight by nearly 2 stone, I began to realise the importance and impact of strength training. I read up on the many benefits for women in mid life and decided that it was essential to incorporate strengthening exercises into my personal daily routine, and also into the dance fitness choreographies.

In 2023 I took the Gym Instructor level 2 Active IQ course, which gave me a deeper understanding how to perform the necessary exercises and offer safe and concise instruction.

Last year I completed levels 1 & 2 of the Active IQ Training Older Adults course.

These trainings highlight working with people over 65 who may also have health limitations including Arthritis, Parkinson's Disease, Diabetes, Hypertension, and other conditions from the onset of aging.

I am committed to bringing you the best exercises to increase and maintain fitness, especially tailored for those of us in our 50s and beyond.

Zumba Gold has become a significant part of my offerings, designed specifically for older adults. This program allows us to enjoy the benefits of dance fitness while being mindful of our bodies and any limitations we may have. It’s about moving at our own pace, celebrating our progress, and having fun!

Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment

One of my primary goals as an instructor is to create a safe space for everyone. I understand that many of you may feel apprehensive about starting a new exercise routine, especially if you haven’t been active for a while. I want you to know that you are in safe hands.

I prioritise safety in every class, ensuring that the movements are accessible and that modifications are available for those who need them. My training has equipped me with the knowledge to help you navigate any challenges you may face, and I am always here to support you on your fitness journey.

Building Community and Combating Loneliness

In today’s world, loneliness is a significant issue, especially for those in mid to late life. I have witnessed firsthand how group exercise classes can foster connections and create a sense of belonging.

My sessions are not just about exercise; they are about building a community where everyone feels valued and included.

I have met many people through my classes who have joined specifically to find friendship and build a social life. Some have moved after downsizing, sadly some have been bereaved, others have found that friends and family have left the area and they feel isolated. Once I realised this was such an important aspect of why people attended, I began to organise social events outside of the fitness sessions. I have made many new friends through the growth of our Zumba with Jo family, and it's truly wonderful to see relationships strengthen and grow both in and outside of the classes.

I love our parties! A fantastic opportunity to get to know each other better outside of class.

I strive to create an environment where friendships can blossom, laughter is abundant, and support is a given. Together, we can combat loneliness and improve our mental health through the power of group exercise.

The Joy of Dance Fitness

Zumba, Zumba Gold and BollyX are not just a workout; they are a joyful experience that allows us to express ourselves through movement. The music transports us, and the dance routines energise us. I encourage you to let go of any inhibitions and embrace the rhythm.

Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a complete beginner, dance fitness welcomes everyone. It’s about enjoying the moment, celebrating our bodies, and finding joy in movement. I often remind my students that it’s not about perfection; it’s about participation and having fun!

Continuing My Education

As I mentioned earlier, my commitment to your wellbeing goes beyond just teaching classes. I am continually seeking out new training opportunities to enhance my skills and knowledge. I am currently studying the Exercise Referral Course to get a greater breadth and depth of knowledge of disease and health conditions. This ensures that I can provide you with the best possible experience in every class.

I believe that learning is a lifelong journey, and I am dedicated to staying updated on the latest trends and techniques in fitness. This way, I can bring fresh ideas and invigorating routines to our sessions, keeping things exciting and engaging for all of you.

I invite you to join me on this journey of fitness, friendship, and fun. Together, we can embrace the joy of dance fitness, combat loneliness, and celebrate our bodies at every stage of life.
