10 Things Becoming a Fitness Instructor Has Taught Me About Women Over 50

When I became a fitness instructor in my 50s, I never imagined how much I would learn – not just about exercise, but about people.
Over the years, I've had the privilege of teaching hundreds of women across Sussex through Zumba Gold, Zumba and my Lift & Laugh classes. Whilst every person is unique, there are certain things I've noticed time and time again.............Women over 50 are far more capable, resilient and inspiring than they often give themselves credit for.
I see incredible transformations every week, and they're not always the ones you'd expect.
It's rarely about losing weight or achieving a perfect fitness level. More often, it's about gaining confidence, finding joy in movement and discovering that life can still be full of new beginnings.
Here are 10 things becoming a fitness instructor has taught me about women over 50.

1. Women Over 50 Almost Always Underestimate Themselves
One of the first things I hear from new participants is:
"I'm not very fit."
"I'm not coordinated."
"I'll be the worst one there."
Almost without fail, within a few weeks, they're surprising themselves.
The truth is that most women over 50 are far stronger than they realise.
Years of juggling careers, raising families, caring for others and managing life's ups and downs have built a resilience that often goes unnoticed.
Sometimes they simply need someone to remind them what they're capable of.
2. Confidence Often Grows Faster Than Fitness
Yes, people become fitter, they improve their stamina, balance, strength and mobility by coming to classes. But what I notice first is usually a gain in confidence, they stop worrying about making mistakes, because they now know that we all go the wrong way sometimes and it really doesnt matter.
That boost in confidence often spills into other areas of life too.
Exercise isn't just changing the body; it's changing how people feel about themselves.
3. Nobody Is Ever 'Too Old'
This is the truth.......
I've taught people who haven't exercised for years.
I've taught complete beginners.
I've taught women who felt nervous walking through the door.
Age itself is rarely the barrier, we let society tell us that older age is a negative, when
really it's about adapting to your bodies needs as it changes over the years, and that's what keeps older people fit, agile and mobile.
Movement really is for everybody.
4. Friendship Is One Of The Most Powerful Forms Of Medicine
People often join for exercise but stay for the friendships, that's why many of the venues I teach in have cafes on site or close by. I have chosen those venues in order to give cleitns the space to socialise before and after classes, so they can connect with each other.
I've watched complete strangers become close friends.
I've seen people support one another through life's difficult moments.
I've seen laughter fill a room before the music has even started.
As we get older, staying socially connected becomes incredibly important for both physical and mental wellbeing.
Sometimes the cup of tea and the chat afterwards are just as valuable as the exercise itself.

5. Laughter Is Underrated
This is probably my favourite lesson of all.
Exercise doesn't have to be serious.
In fact, I believe it works best when it's enjoyable, if you enjoy your workout then you are far more likely to keep to a routine. (and consistency is key for results).
There are always moments when we laugh at ourselves, forget the choreography or head in the wrong direction, and that's absolutely fine.
Nobody is striving for perfection. We're simply moving our bodies and having fun whilst doing it.
I truly believe laughter is one of the secret ingredients to staying healthy.
6. Consistency Beats Perfection Every Time
Women often tell me:
"I haven't exercised all week."
"I had a bad month."
"I've fallen off track."
My answer is always the same.....Just come back, my door is always open. Don't feel embarrassed that you struggled to keep it up..
You don't need to be perfect, you simply need to keep showing up.
One class a week soon becomes two and before you know it you've formed a habit.
Consistency is far more powerful than intensity.
7. Music Has A Magical Effect
I've always loved music.
Growing up i loved buying records, I developed a lifelong love of Motown, soul and the sounds of the 60s as well as many other genres. Be it disco from the 70's, dance from the 90's and I do love a bit of good hard rock too!
Music has an incredible ability to transport us to other places, take us back in time, and
within seconds, a song can trigger memories, boost our mood and encourage us to move without even thinking about it.
That's one of the reasons I love teaching dance fitness so much.
It's exercise that doesn't feel like exercise.
8. Strength Matters More Than Ever As We Age
As we get older, our priorities begin to change.
It's no longer about running faster or burning the most calories.
It's about maintaining independence.
Being able to carry shopping bags.
Getting up from the floor.
Improving balance.
Protecting our bones.
Moving confidently through everyday life.
This is exactly why I created Lift & Laugh – to help women build functional strength in a fun, supportive environment. Strong isn't a look, strong is a lifestyle.

9. Starting Something New Is Incredibly Empowering
Walking into a class for the very first time can feel daunting.
But every single week I see people being brave enough to give something new a go.
That willingness to start again, to learn and to step outside your comfort zone is something I deeply admire. It proves that midlife isn't about slowing down, it's about opening new doors.
10. It's Never Too Late To Prioritise Yourself
This may be the most important lesson of all.
Many women spend decades putting everyone else first.
Children.
Partners.
Parents.
Work.
Life simply gets busy. Eventually, it's easy to forget that your own wellbeing matters too.
But prioritising yourself isn't selfish, it's essential.
Taking an hour for yourself each week isn't an indulgence, it's an investment.
When you feel stronger, healthier and happier, everybody around you benefits too.
My Biggest Takeaway
If becoming a fitness instructor has taught me anything, it's this:
Women over 50 are extraordinary.
They are stronger, braver and more capable than they often believe.
And whilst my job may be to teach exercise, I feel like I'm constantly learning from them too.
Every class reminds me that movement isn't about age, size or ability.
It's about feeling good, staying connected and celebrating what our bodies can still do.
I genuinely believe midlife can be one of the most exciting chapters of our lives.
And if you're reading this wondering whether it's too late to start something new…
I can confidently tell you.
It isn't.
