Why I Became a Zumba Instructor in My 50s

If you had told me in my 20s that one day I’d be teaching fitness classes, running events, and helping hundreds of women feel stronger and more confident through movement… I honestly wouldn’t have believed you!

Like many women, life was busy. Work, responsibilities, family, everyday stresses — fitness often became something that sat somewhere on the “I should do that” list rather than something joyful.

Then, in my 40s, I discovered Zumba.

And it completely changed my life.

Finding Exercise That Didn’t Feel Like a Chore

Before Zumba, exercise often felt very serious to me. I’d tried gyms and classes before, but nothing really clicked. I think many women feel the same — especially if they haven’t exercised for years or feel intimidated walking into fitness spaces.

Then I walked into a Zumba class.

The music was uplifting, the atmosphere was welcoming, and for the first time in a long time, exercise felt FUN.

That was the turning point.

I wasn’t worrying about calories, mirrors, competition, or being “perfect.” I was simply moving, smiling, and enjoying myself.

And that’s when I realised something important:

When exercise feels enjoyable, you actually want to keep doing it.

Starting Something New in Midlife - A Zumba Instructor

One of the biggest myths we tell ourselves is that it’s “too late” to start something new.

I started doing Zumba when I was 43 years old.

Not 23. Not fresh out of university.

I had recently left my career in the print industry, and the desk job and needed new direction in my life.

Zumba was my hobby and my happy place so it seemed to make sense.

I did my Zumba training in 2019 — at the stage many women begin to lose confidence in themselves physically.

But actually, it turned out to be the perfect time.

Life experience brings empathy, understanding, patience, and connection. I knew exactly how intimidating exercise could feel for people returning after years away. I understood the worries about fitness levels, coordination, confidence, and body image because I’d experienced many of those feelings myself.

That’s why I’ve always tried to create classes that feel welcoming, supportive, and completely judgement-free.

It Was Never About Perfection

One thing I always say in class is:

“You do not need to be a dancer to do Zumba.”

Honestly, if you can move and smile at the same time, you’re already doing brilliantly!

My classes have never been about getting every step perfect. They’re about feeling better mentally and physically. They’re about community, laughter, music, movement, and confidence.

Over the years I’ve seen incredible friendships form in class. I’ve watched women arrive nervous and unsure, then gradually grow stronger, happier, and more confident.

That is the most rewarding part of what I do.

Why I’m Passionate About Helping Women in Midlife

and Beyond

As we get older, movement becomes even more important — not just for fitness, but for strength, mobility, balance, mental wellbeing, confidence, and independence.

But many midlife and laterlife women feel invisible to the fitness industry.

So much fitness marketing is aimed at younger people, extreme workouts, or unrealistic expectations.

I wanted to create something different.

A place where women could come exactly as they are.

A place where people can exercise without pressure or intimidation.

A place where fitness feels joyful rather than punishing.

That philosophy now runs through all of my classes — from Zumba and Zumba Gold to Lift & Laugh functional fitness sessions.

Building “Zumba with Jo… Let’s Go!”

What started as one class gradually grew into a real community.

Over the years I’ve had the privilege of teaching classes across Sussex including Brighton, Shoreham, Worthing, Henfield, Burgess Hill, Southwick and beyond.

I’ve hosted themed events, fitness parties, workshops, community sessions, and wellbeing activities — and I still genuinely love walking into a class every single week.

The energy people bring is amazing.

There’s something incredibly special about a room full of people all moving together, encouraging each other, and forgetting about everyday worries for an hour.

My approach to building the business up has been to keep on learning!

Every year I have taken new courses to improve my knowledge of fitness, nutrition, wellbeing and also the boring stuff too!

Keeping it fresh, staying motivated, is possible through the quest for knowledge and the amazing results that can be acheived with these resources. From the Zumba training, to Gym Instructor and recently the GP Exercise Referral Instructor qualification, I strive to bring you the most up to date methods and information from the fitness industry.

To Anyone Thinking About Starting…

If you’re reading this and wondering whether to try a class, my advice is simple:

Please don’t wait until you feel “fit enough.”

Nobody starts as the finished article, everyone begins somewhere.

And honestly? The hardest part is usually just walking through the door the first time.

After that, you might just discover — like I did — that exercise can become one of the most positive parts of your week.
