When the temperature rises, many of us find ourselves eating differently.
Heavy meals that seem appealing in winter can suddenly feel far less attractive when it's 28 degrees outside and the sun is blazing through the kitchen window. Our bodies naturally crave lighter foods, fresher flavours and plenty of fluids.
As a fitness instructor, I often notice that people feel more sluggish during hot weather. They may be sleeping less well, sweating more, and finding their usual exercise routine a little more challenging. The good news is that making a few simple adjustments to what we eat and drink can help us feel more comfortable, energised and hydrated throughout the summer months.
The focus doesn't need to be on dieting or restriction. Instead, summer is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy colourful seasonal foods that are naturally packed with vitamins, minerals and water.
Here are some simple ideas to help you stay cool and nourished this summer.

Why We Often Want Lighter Foods in Hot Weather
Our bodies work hard to regulate temperature when it's hot.
Digestion itself creates heat, which is one reason why many people naturally prefer salads, fruit and lighter meals during warm weather. Foods with a high water content can also contribute to hydration while providing important nutrients.
Summer fruits and vegetables are particularly helpful because they often contain large amounts of water, including:
Watermelon
Cucumber
Tomatoes
Lettuce
Strawberries
Peaches
Courgettes
Peppers
These foods can help supplement the fluids we're drinking while adding colour and variety to our meals.
Summer Salad Ideas That Are Anything But Boring
Forget sad lettuce leaves and bland diet food.
A good summer salad should be satisfying, colourful and full of flavour.
Mediterranean Sunshine Salad
A personal favourite for hot days.
Combine:
Mixed leaves
Cherry tomatoes
Cucumber
Red onion
Feta cheese
Olives
Fresh basil
Dress with olive oil, lemon juice and black pepper.
This salad provides healthy fats, protein and plenty of refreshing crunch.
Strawberry and Spinach Salad
A surprisingly delicious combination.
Mix:
Baby spinach
Sliced strawberries
Toasted walnuts
Crumbled feta
Red onion
Add a simple balsamic dressing.
The sweet and savoury combination works beautifully and feels wonderfully summery.
Protein-Packed Chicken and Mango Salad
Ideal if you've been to a fitness class and want something more substantial.
Combine:
Cooked chicken breast
Mango chunks
Mixed salad leaves
Cucumber
Avocado
Lime dressing
The combination of protein and healthy fats can help keep you feeling satisfied for longer.
Easy Three Bean Summer Salad
Perfect for picnics and barbecues.
Mix together:
Cannellini beans
Kidney beans
Green beans
Cherry tomatoes
Parsley
Lemon dressing
This is packed with fibre and protein and can be prepared in advance.
The Importance of Hydration
Most of us know we should drink more when the weather is hot.
However, hydration isn't just about avoiding thirst.
Even mild dehydration can contribute to:
Fatigue
Headaches
Reduced concentration
Dizziness
Lower exercise performance
Many older adults also experience a reduced sensation of thirst, making it even more important to drink regularly throughout the day.
A reusable water bottle can be a useful reminder.
If plain water feels boring, adding slices of lemon, cucumber, mint or berries can make it much more appealing.
Refreshing Summer Mocktails
Mocktails are having a moment, and it's easy to see why.
They offer all the fun and flavour of a special drink without the alcohol, making them ideal for garden gatherings, family barbecues or simply relaxing after a busy day.
Cucumber Mint Cooler
You'll need:
Sparkling water
Fresh cucumber slices
Mint leaves
Lime juice
Serve over ice for an incredibly refreshing drink.
Watermelon Splash
Blend:
Watermelon chunks
Fresh lime juice
Ice
Top with sparkling water if desired.
Simple, hydrating and naturally sweet.
Berry Fizz
Combine:
Mixed berries
Sparkling water
Fresh mint
A squeeze of lemon
Lightly crush the berries before serving.

Peach Sunrise
Mix:
Peach puree
Orange juice
Sparkling water
Serve over plenty of ice.
It looks impressive but takes only minutes to prepare.
Eating Well Doesn't Need to Be Complicated
One thing I've learned over the years is that healthy eating is usually most successful when it's simple.
Summer offers an abundance of delicious foods that require very little preparation. A bowl of fresh berries, a colourful salad or a chilled mocktail can be just as satisfying as something much more complicated.
Rather than focusing on what you shouldn't eat, try thinking about what you can add more of:
More colour
More fruit and vegetables
More hydration
More variety
More enjoyment
Small changes often make the biggest difference.
Keep Moving This Summer
Of course, food and hydration are only part of the picture.
Regular movement remains important all year round, although during periods of very hot weather it can be sensible to choose cooler times of day, lower-intensity activities, or air-conditioned environments where possible.
Listen to your body, drink plenty of fluids and don't be afraid to adjust your routine when temperatures rise. When the heat is 'on' - I tailor the playlist and routines to adapt to the intensity level suitable fo rthe temperature. Zumba Gold is the ideal exercise class for lower impact and lower intensity fitness workouts.
So whether you're sipping a homemade watermelon mocktail in the garden, preparing a colourful salad for lunch, or dancing your way through a Zumba class, here's to staying cool, staying active and making the most of the sunshine while it lasts.
