World Obesity Day: You Deserve Support, Not Shame

world obesity day logo

Every year, World Obesity Day encourages us to look at weight and health through a more compassionate lens.

And that word — compassion — is so important.

Because for many people, weight is not just about food or exercise.

It’s about hormones. It’s about menopause. It’s about stress and cortisol. It’s about long working days and caring responsibilities. It’s about confidence. And sometimes, it’s about shame.

If you’ve ever thought:

“I know what I should be doing.”“I’ve tried before.”“I just can’t seem to stick to it.”

Please hear this clearly:

You are not lazy. You are not lacking willpower. And you are absolutely not alone.

Weight Management in Midlife Is Different World Obesity Day

In our 40s, 50s and beyond, our bodies change.

Oestrogen shifts. Muscle mass naturally declines. Metabolism slows. Sleep patterns alter. Stress hormones can rise.

What worked in our 30s often doesn’t work anymore — and that can feel deeply frustrating.

But sustainable weight management isn’t about punishing your body.

It’s about supporting it.

And that support comes through strength, movement, community — and self-kindness.

Movement Should Feel Welcoming, Not Intimidating

One of the most common things I hear from women is:

“I don’t feel fit enough to join.” “I’ll be the biggest one there.” “I’ll hold everyone back.” “I’ll look silly.”

That hesitation is real.

Which is exactly why Zumba Gold exists.

Zumba Gold is lower impact, joint-friendly and completely adaptable. You go at your own pace.

You take breaks when you need to. You build gradually.

There is no competition. No one judging you. No pressure to “keep up.”

Just music, movement, and a room full of people doing their best.

And when movement feels enjoyable, you’re far more likely to stay consistent.

And consistency is where change happens.

But What If You’re Not Ready to Walk Into a Room Yet?

Let’s talk about the bit people don’t always say out loud.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t the workout.

It’s walking through the door.

If confidence has taken a knock…If you’re carrying extra weight and feeling self-conscious…If you haven’t exercised in years…

Even a friendly class can feel daunting, and that’s completely understandable.

This is where my online option becomes such a powerful stepping stone.

Build Confidence at Home First

Through the Zumba Gold Online Library, you can start in the privacy of your own home.

No one watching. No comparisons. No pressure.

You can:

• Try a 30-minute session to begin with • Pause when you need to • Repeat routines until you feel confident • Build stamina gradually • Get used to the movements, and something beautiful happens when you do this.

Your body remembers how to move, your coordination improves, your fitness increases quietly in the background and so your confidence grows.

So when — and if — you decide to come to a live class, you’re not starting from zero.

You’re stepping in already capable.

For many people, this removes the biggest psychological barrier to beginning.

It turns “I could never” into “Actually… I can.”

And that shift is powerful.

Weight Management Is About More Than Calories

Yes, movement helps burn energy.

But exercise also:

• Improves insulin sensitivity • Builds muscle (which boosts metabolism) • Regulates appetite hormones • Reduces stress • Improves sleep

And stress reduction is huge.

So much evening snacking and comfort eating isn’t about hunger — it’s about depletion.

When you move your body — whether in a Shoreham class or in your living room at home — you release endorphins. You lift your mood. You reduce cortisol.

You feel better.

And when you feel better, you tend to make better choices.

Not perfectly, but progressively.

The Power of Strength in Midlife

In my Lift & Laugh sessions, we focus on functional strength — the kind that supports real life.

Muscle is metabolically active tissue. Increasing muscle mass helps your body use energy more efficiently, even at rest.

But beyond metabolism, strength training:

• Protects bone density• Improves balance• Reduces joint pain• Enhances posture• Boosts confidence

Confidence changes everything.

When you feel stronger physically, you start making stronger decisions for yourself.

Support, Not Shame

On World Obesity Day, statistics are often shared about risk factors and health conditions.

And yes, carrying excess weight can increase the risk of things like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

But shame does not create sustainable change.

Support does, community does, kindness does.

I see it every week in my classes across Shoreham, Brighton, Worthing, Burgess Hill, Henfield and Southwick.

People arrive unsure but months later, they’re standing taller, laughing, making friends, moving more freely.

Sometimes the scales shift dramatically. Sometimes they move slowly. Sometimes body composition changes more than weight.

But energy improves. Strength increases. Confidence grows.

And that is real progress.

One Hour Can Change a Week

It might feel small.

But one hour of movement can ripple through your entire week.

Better sleep.Better mood. Improved appetite regulation. A sense of achievement.

Weight management isn’t one big heroic decision.

It’s a series of small, supported steps.

And whether that step is walking into a live class — or pressing play at home in your living room — it counts.

You Don’t Have to Be “Ready”

You don’t need to:

Lose weight first. Get fitter first. Buy new workout clothes first. Wait for the perfect Monday.

You can start exactly where you are.

At home, in a hall. with others or on your own.

The important thing is beginning.

You Are Welcome Here — In Person or Online

If World Obesity Day has made you reflect on your health, please know there are options.

If you want community, music and camaraderie — join a live class.

If you want privacy and gentle confidence-building first — start with the online library.

Both are valid. Both are supportive. Both move you forward.
